Lifting Equipment – All about Shackles

A U-shaped piece of metal with a bolt to secure the end is a simple description of a Shackle. They come in different types, some of which we will be looking at below.
Anchor Shackle – It is used to refer to shackles that have a round ‘O’ shaped look. Usually alternately used with a Bow Shackle. A bow shackle usually has a larger bow area than that of an anchor shackle. They are designed to take the load from all directions and not stressing on one side. The larger the size of the shackle is the less it’s over strength is but it does take a larger strap.
Chain Shackle – They are also called D-Shackles. Its name describes its ‘D’ shape. These shackles are narrower than Anchor or Bow Shackles. They are designed to take more load and mainly in line. They might not support side loads and may result in twisting or bending. They have a threaded pin.
Stainless Steel Shackles – These shackles are usually preferred for marine applications. They come in various grades. They are resistant to corrosion, ocean water spray and can take extreme conditions or moisture.
Galvanized Shackles – Very similar in quality to Stainless Steel Shackles, it is protected from rust and corrosion too. They are generally used for Industrial Purposes. It has a coat of zinc oxide to protect itself from oxidization. Even though it is as durable and strong as the stainless steel shackles, it is still less pricey.
Types of Pins – The pin type helps in deciding for that purpose the shackle is ideal to be used. They come in different types like Captive Pins, Screw Pins, Round Pins, and Bolt Pins. Bolt Pins are usually used for heavy loads because they secure well with a nut/bolt. Screw Pins are easy to secure and remove making it ideal for most purposes and easy to use. Captive Pins cannot be separated from the bow and this type is most ideal for marine applications as the risk of dropping or losing the pins in the water is high and this can be avoided by using Captive Pins.
